Release Date: 17 October 2000
Since the start of the school year the Kenora Joint Forces Drug Unit [composed of the Kenora Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and Dryden Police Service] have been working with school officials of the local high schools in the city of Kenora to address drug issues.
To date police have arrested and charged eleven [11] individuals with drug possession in the area of the two high schools. In all cases the people arrested were found to be using and possessing a controlled substance [marihuana].
These types of statistics are of a concern to the police and school staff. Marihuana can cause distorted sense of time, slurred speech, memory loss, loss of co-ordination and lack of motivation. This can affect academic performance. Parents are encouraged to speak to their young adults about the effects of drug usage.
