HISTORY OF THE DRUG ENFORCEMENT UNITS
The Tri-Force Drug Unit was formed between the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Thunder Bay Police and Ontario Provincial Police Drug Units in October 1999. Prior to this the three Units worked together from time to time or one or two members were assigned to other Units for a designated period of time.
The agencies felt that it was important to pool resources and personnel together to prevent duplication of service.
The newly formed Unit has a mandate to conduct drug investigations in the area of Manitouwadge to the east, Manitoba border to the west, Minnesota / Ontario Border to the south and Hudson Bay to the north. The Unit’s primary function is to investigate and apprehend drug traffickers and producers at the local, Provincial, Federal and International levels. The Unit’s mandate requires us to assist all Police Services in the Region with enforcement efforts and education.
The Unit is composed of the three Investigative Teams:
PROJECT TEAM:
Mandate is to target top level organized crime groups involved in the illegal distribution of drugs.
NORTH WEST REGION TEAM:
To address public complaints and Crime Stoppers Tips in all areas of the North West Region.
THUNDER BAY CITY STREET TEAM:
To address public complaints and Crime Stoppers Tips within the City of Thunder Bay.
These teams are composed of members from all three Services.
KENORA / DRYDEN JOINT FORCES DRUG UNIT:
The Kenora / Dryden Joint Forces Drug Unit was formed in December 1999. It was originally composed of the Ontario Provincial Police and Kenora Police Service. The Unit was formed to address the concerns of the public in the Kenora area. The Unit conducts strictly street level investigations addressing drug trafficking and production issues raised by the public and Crime Stoppers.
In February 2000 the Dryden Police Service joined the Unit and has allowed the Kenora Unit to operate in the Kenora and Dryden areas.
In January 2001 the Atikokan Police Service joined the Drug Unit. This now means all police services in the region are members.
DRUG ACTIVITY CONSEQUENCES
Most criminal offences, such as break and enter, thefts, robberies and assaults, can be attributed to some kind of substance abuse problem. This affects everyone in the North West with increased costs for insurance, policing, medical, and social services.
All of the enforcement agencies in the North West are attempting to do their part by attacking the drug trafficking and production problems with strict enforcement and education. We look forward to your assistance in this endeavour.
If you have drug related information call Crime Stoppers, your local Police Service or OPP Detachment.
